Qualcomm unveiled a new fast-charging feature for Android devices, named Quick Charge 5. The fast-charging technology allows users to charge their devices to 50% from an empty battery in only 5 minutes, or 100% in 15 minutes. Quick Charge 5 has charging speeds that can charge an Android phone much more rapidly than Apple’s fast-charging feature on iPhone 8 models and newer.

Qualcomm considers the Quick Charge 5 feature as the “world’s fastest commercial charging solution”, which supplies over 100W of power to devices. Over 1,000 mobile accessory companies and 250 mobile device brands will offer the feature to their Android phones and tablets including with charging accessories worldwide. It is 70% more efficient than their previous Quick Charge 4/4+ along with keeping the device 10 degrees Celsius cooler while it is fast charging. This comes from the 12 separate voltage, current and temperature protections included.

Qualcomm will be providing power management ICs to Android device manufacturers to implement the new Quick Charge 5 feature, along with Apple creating a similar feature for their next iPhone 12 models projected to be announced on September 8th. Apple’s next generation of its fast-charging devices may not be as fast as Quick Charge 5, as the company relies on more conservative, rapid charging technologies while maintaining the longevity of the battery.

Therefore, the first Android devices to include the feature will be in the 3rd quarter of this year. These include devices with Qualcomm 865 and 865 Plus chipsets and later models. There are already a few Android and released with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processors this year, which allows existing users of these devices to charge their devices faster with the new Quick Charge 5.
