Apple Officially Released macOS High Sierra To The Public, Here Is What's New

Apple has just released this year’s major update to its desktop operating system, macOS High Sierra to the public, the new system is a free download that's available today for everyone who has a compatible Mac. You can download macOS High Sierra through the Software Update function in the Mac App Store. MacOS High Sierra is compatible with all Macs able to run Sierra.

The new macOS High Sierra is designed to improve on the previous macOS Sierra operating system with some major under-the-hood upgrades and a handful of outward-facing changes like brand new Apple File System for Macs with SSDs, significant updates to the Photos app’s interface and editing tools, Safari 11, iCloud file sharing, etc.

Apple File System (APFS), a file system designed for solid state drives (not available for Fusion drives or standard hard drives), is the new default for these drives in macOS High Sierra. APFS is much faster, secure, and optimized for modern storage systems. It features native encryption, safe document saves, stable snapshots, and crash protection, plus it brings performance improvements.

Apple also introduced new version of its graphics framework integrated into High Sierra, Metal 2. Metal 2 offers developers a new API that delivers better performance. System-level painting and drawing like the transition to Mission Control, they are now built on top of Metal. Metal 2 also brings support for machine learning, external GPUs, and VR content creation for the first time.

Photos app is probably the most significant user-facing update in High Sierra. For pro photographers introduced the new edit mode. Adjustments are directly exposed in the sidebar and there are new controls like Curves and Selective Color. Photos also offers much better integration with third-party editing applications; just right-click on an image to ‘Edit With’ apps like Pixelmator and Photoshop.

Safari now blocks autoplay videos and includes Intelligent Tracking Prevention to protect your privacy, and there's also a new always-on option for Safari Reader. Mail search is better than ever, Mail storage has been optimized to take up 35 percent less space, and iCloud Drive file sharing and iCloud storage family plans have been added.

Like iOS 11, Siri has a much more natural voice with changes in expression, and Siri has gotten smarter with cross-device syncing. There are also tweaks to FaceTime which you can snap live photos, Notes support tables and pinning, and improved Spotlight search, etc.
