Apple Remains #1 Tablet Maker W/ 14.5 Million iPads Shipped Last Quarter

Apple announced during the earnings call this week that it generated $6.7 billion from iPad, however, since Apple no longer disclose iPad unit sales, we don't know how much of units the company sold. A report from research firm Strategy Analytics, on the other hand, suggested Apple shipped an estimated 14.5 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2018.

To put that in perspective, Apple reported sales of 13.2 million iPads in 1Q FY18, therefore, the data suggests that iPad unit sales have grown nearly 10 percent on a year-over-year basis. Keep in mind, though, the average selling price of iPad has increased: the average selling price was $463 last year, while the average selling price of iPads was $445 in 2017.

Regardless, Apple continued to dominate the tablet market, surpassing Samsung's estimated 7.5 million tablet shipments in the quarter. Meanwhile, Amazon, Huawei, and Lenovo claimed the #3, #4, and #5 spot with an estimated 5.5 million, 4.6 million, and 2.3 million units shipped in the holiday quarter respectively.

This year, Apple is expected to launch iPad mini 4 and seven-generation of iPad with support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, both features were limited to iPad Pro models previously.
