Johny Srouji takes over Apple's modem Design efforts in an attempt to ramping up in-house celular chip development

According to Reuters, Apple is ramping up its efforts to design in-house modern chips, with sources of Reuters claimed that Johny Srouji, the company's senior vice president of hardware technologies, takes over the company's modem design efforts in January, the team was led previously by Rubén Caballero.


Apple Inc has moved its modem chip engineering effort into its in-house hardware technology group from its supply chain unit, two people familiar with the move told Reuters, a sign the tech company is looking to develop a key component of its iPhones after years of buying it from outside suppliers [...]

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, took over the company’s modem design efforts in January, the sources said. The organizational move has not been previously reported.
The report comes after Apple is said to developing its own cellular moderns for future iPhones, a move that intent to reduce reliance on suppliers, considering Apple is in a major battle with Qualcomm. Even though the report says Apple has already moved Srouji into a new position, Reuters noted that it would take several years for it to  come to fruition, so it's unlikely to see an Apple-designed 5G chips in year's iPhones.
