Apple Switching To A Random Serial Number Format For Future Products

In a newly leaked internal memo to Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple revealed that it plans to update its serial number format to a random alphanumeric string by the end of 2020, and that change will apply to future new products. However, Apple notes that all serial numbers that existed prior to the adjustments will be preserved.

Apple has been using alphanumeric serial numbers for a while, but after some time, one will determine the date of manufacture and the demand of the product on the basis of the current format and more. Randomly generating serial numbers can certainly make it harder for people to access the above details and can help to a certain degree to minimize similar incidents of fraud.

The internal memo was obtained by MacRumors, so it's unclear if this change will apply to worldwide just limited to markets like the US and the EU.
