New Record Set For Global App Spending On 2019 Christmas Day

The App Store set a new transaction record on Christmas Day, new data from Sensor Tower suggests. On Christmas Day, global consumers spent a total of $ 277 million on Google Play Store and App Store, a year-on-year increase of 11.3%. Among them, consumers spent a total of USD 193 million on the App Store, an increase of roughly 16% over the same span in 2018, far exceeding the 2.7% growth rate of Google Play.

As far as categories are concerned, this Christmas, most customers spent on gaming, it accounts for 76% of the total revenue of the Google Play Store and App Store, an increase of about 8% year-on-year, and the boost is greater than $195 million. The holiday also stimulated the enthusiasm of players to spend in-game purchases. Among them, Tencent topped the list with PUBG Mobile's $85 million in-game revenue, which was a 431% increase from the $16 million in-game revenue on Christmas 2018.

Between non-gaming spending, entertainment apps like Disney + accounted for the largest proportion. Amid them, Tinder ranked first among non-gaming applications, saw a gross revenue of $2.1 million.

In the U.S., App Store and Google Play Store consumption growth were slightly lower year-on-year, and app consumer spending increased by 4.8 percent over the same period last year. Yet internationally, the Google Play Store and App Store were booming at an annual rate of 11.3 percent, and consumers are spending more than $80 million on both platforms up from $76 million in 2018 on Christmas.

Christmas is often a huge day for the App Store, as people receive new iPhone and iTunes gift cards during the period. Sensor Tower's figures are actually slightly lower compared to Apple's historical data. Apple said App Store sales exceeded $1.22 billion during the 2018 holiday period, from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve, and believes the App Store will also set a new record sales figures for the 2019 holiday season.
