A report out in Asia today, citing supply chain sources that Apple is considering delaying the launch of its 5G iPhone 12 models "by months."
The report from Nikkei Asian Review said that in addition to development, Apple is concerned that the current situation will greatly reduce consumers' willingness to upgrade their phones, which may lead to a decline in acceptance of the first 5G iPhones.
According to the report, suppliers were told to delay production of the iPhone 12 components by about two to three months.
We have been notified to start shipping in big volumes to meet Apple’s new product launch by the end of August, instead of like in previous years, when it would be sometime in June, said a supplier of components related to printed circuit boards. The change was made very recently, and that could imply that the mass production of the phone could also be delayed for months.Per the Nikkei, travel restrictions to the United States, China, and elsewhere will affect the engineering development of the iPhone 12 series. Apple had initially intended to collaborate with suppliers in early March to create a "more concrete prototype" for the new iPhone, but had to delay the cooperation until the end of the month and delay it afterwards. Suppliers claim that the likelihood of a delay is imminent despite Apple's current position in the engineering process.
Ultimately, Nikkei suggests that Apple will have to take a decision in May, factoring their usual September launch schedule, and if Apple postponed the launch for several months, the company is expected to consider introducing the next-generation iPhone early in 2021.
