Apple Acquires NextVR, A California-Based Virtual Reality Startup

Apple has acquired the virtual reality startup NextVR, the company confirmed to Bloomberg on Thursday afternoon. It's reported that Apple spent around $100 million to purchase the company.

Through NextVR, the virtual reality is integrated with the sport, music, and movie content, delivering live VR experiences on Sony, HTC, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and other manufacturers' VR headsets.

NextVR's website updated shortly after Apple made the announcement that it had brought the California-based company, with a landing page saying that it is "heading in a new direction." The startup allegedly ceases operations this week.

It has now become clear that Apple is definitely making significant investments in augmented and virtual reality. Coincidence or not, Apple analyst Ming-Chi has predicted today that the iPhone maker is likely to announce the launch of its augmented reality Smart Glasses in 2022 at earliest.

Today's acquisition marks Apple's third in 2020, following the purchase of voice technology startup Voysis and weather app Dark Sky.
