5.2 Million Apple Watches Shipped In Q1 2020, Lifetime Shipments To Reach 100 Million Soon

Apple shipped an estimated 5.2 million Apple Watches in the first quarter of 2020, and held a 36.3% of market share, well ahead of Huawei, Samsung, Garmin, and Fitbit, according to research firm Canalys.

During the quarter, despite Apple’s shipments fell 13%, its smartwatch platform remains the world’s largest and is growing steadily.  Furthermore, it's said that Apple Watch gained 4 million new active users during the quarter, bringing the total installed base to an estimated 70 million. Canalys expects lifetime Apple Watch shipments to reach 100 million units in the next three months.

In a statement, Canalys Analyst Vincent Thielke said that the chief reason concerning Apple Watch underwent a rather slow performance in Europe and North America was "due to Apple customers switching their attention to AirPods as a ‘must-have’ accessory." Elsewhere, Apple captured the greatest number of new users. For example, in Southeast Asia and Latin America, the company got a boost from its latest carrier partnerships.

The research also suggested that since the launch of cellular models enabled Xiaomi and Apple to grow smartwatch shipments quarter on quarter, which is unprecedented.

Closely behind Apple was Huawei, where we saw the Chinese smartphone maker shipped 2.1 million smartwatch units, having taken 14.9% of the market share, and with an impressive 113% jump in annual growth. Samsung, on the other hand, claimed the 3rd spot, with 1.8 million shipments and a 46% increase over the previous year.

Lastly, Canalys expects China will be the key smartwatch growth driver in 2020 for two main reasons: a recovering economy, which has been hit by the CIVID-19 pandemic, and a greater push from local players, including Huawei, Xiaomi and newcomer Oppo.
