macOS Big Sur Now Available For Download, Here Is Everything New

Finally, after months of beta testing, macOS Big Sur, the latest operating system designed for the Mac, is now available to download for the public. macOS Big Sur can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

Here is the list of devices that will support macOS Big Sur:
  • MacBook 2015 and later
  • MacBook Air 2013 and later
  • MacBook Pro 2013 and later
  • Mac mini 2014 and later
  • iMac 2014 and later
  • iMac Pro 2017 and later
  • Mac Pro 2013 and later
macOS Big Sur introduces an all-new design, new app icons, tweaks to the window design, menu bars, sidebars, and more. Apple also brought the Control Center from iOS to macOS Big Sur, delivering quick access to controls from the desktop. An updated Notification Center includes more interactive notifications and redesigned widgets that come in different sizes, providing users with more relevant information at a glance. And a new design for core apps brings more organization to multiple open windows and makes interacting with apps even easier.

Notably, Safari got a screw of new features, including a fast JavaScript engine helps it outperform other browsers on Mac and PC (up to 50% faster when loading frequently visited sites), the ability to customize the new start page with a background image, and sections like their Reading List and iCloud Tabs, built-in translation, more tabs can now be showed onscreen, improved support for extensions, and a new Privacy Report delivers added visibility into how Safari protects browsing activity across the web.

Inside macOS Big Sur's Messages app, users can now pin their favorite conversations to the top of their messages list for fast access, and search has been entirely redesigned — organizing results into links, photos, and matching terms — to help users quickly find what they are looking for. Users can also send Message effects and create and customize their Memoji. There is also new group messaging features that include Inline replies and @mention.

Completely redesigned for macOS Big Sur, Maps now lets you discover places to visit and things to do with Guides from trusted resources, or create custom guides of favorite restaurants, parks, and vacation spots that can be shared with friends and family. Cycling and electric vehicle trips can now be routed on a Mac and sent directly to the iPhone to have when on the go.
